Question: Christy Monroe Merrill Suing wrote:

My name is Christy Monroe Merrill Suing. I am the only living person of this branch of the family and I know nothing of the family. My father was Charles Monroe Merrill, 1906 -1977, childhood in the Georgetown area of Washington, DC, and adulthood in Maryland. My grandparents were Lily! Payne Merrill (died 1961) and ??? Monroe Merrill (died 1940s). They are buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Washington, DC. They had lived in Georgetown. I would truly love to find out about my family. Many thanks.

Answer: Christy:

We corresponded back in 2001 and we were not much help at that time.  We now have access to more recent census records.  With your father's date, 1906-1977, we found his exact b. date in the SSDI, 1906 Sep 17 - 1977 Apr _.  Looking in the 1910 census, we found Melville M, 32, b. DC, par b. ME, m.1 -7 yrs; Lily M, 32, b. DC, par b. VA, 1ch, 1liv; Charles M, 3, DC.  Going back to the 1900 census we found Charles M, Govt clerk, 48, b. ME, Apr 1852, m. 23 yrs, Ina E, 43, b. ME, Mar 1857, 2ch, 1liv; Melville M, 22, b. DC, Oct 1878.  In 1880, there are two identical listings for Melville's father, Charles M, one in Bridgeton, ME, [maybe visiting parents?] and one in Washington DC:  Charles M, Postal Clerk, 28, ME; Ina, 23, ME; Melville, 2, DC.

So Melville M's father was Charles M [probably Charles Monroe since Melville named his son that, probably for his father].  The ME vital records give Charles M's b. as 1852 Apr 14 in Bridgton ME, s/o Amasa H and Clara Elliot. Charles M (9)'s lineage is Amasa H (8), Samuel (7), Joseph (6), Daniel (5), Joseph (4), Daniel (3,2), immigrant Nathaniel (1).  So you are a 12th generation descendant of  immigrant Nathaniel who came to Newbury MA in 1639 from Wherstead, Suffolk, England. More details are available.

Do you have exact dates for Melville M and Lily from Oak hill cemetery?  We tried to find who is buried there, but that info is not on line.  Who, when and where did your parents m.?  Siblings?  It looks like both Charles M (9) and Mellville each had only one child survive. Your b. date and m. date and place? Be assured no info on the living will become internet accessible from us.

Hope this helps,

Howard and Jean Merrill

Question: TINSLEY RANDOLPH MERRILL wrote:

We are a family of Merrills (3 brothers - Arthur Jesse, William Harrison, and Tinsley Randolph (me)- and numerous children and grandchildren) located in Atlanta, Georgia. Our father was Arthur Jesse Merrill, our grandfather was Arthur Jesse Merrill, our great grandfather was Albert, I be! lieve. Any idea where we connect?

Answer: Randy:

Thank you for posting this query.  We had you and your brothers [but no details] in our "Lineage Unknown" file with a reference of  "Morrison Family of Rocky River NC".  That reference also gave Arthur Jesse Jr and Sr.  The only date we had was the b. of Arthur Jesse Jr in 1908.  Your query prompted us to look for him in the 1910 census. We found him in Atlanta with his parents: Arthur J, 33, b. IA, Parents b. IL, m. once - 2 yrs; Natalie, 33 b. GA, 1 ch, 1 liv;  Arthur J Jr, 1 7/12.  Now with Arthur J Sr's age we looked for him in the 1900 census. We found him in Atlanta with his father and stepmother:  Albert H, 46, Nov 1853, b. IL, par b. VT, m. 8 yrs [to 2nd wife]; Ella C, 40, Jul 1859; WI, 2 ch [not Merrill?], 2 liv;  Arthur J, 21, Nov 1878, b. IA, par b. IL;  Jennie B, 13, Apr 1887, b. FL, par. b. IL.  We looked for Albert H and Arthur J in the 1880 census but have not located them.

We looked at all the Alberts in our "lineage known" databases and found one that seems to fit, but we don't have enough data to be sure this is the right one. We found an Albert Herve [no dates], son of Asa (8) and Jane Amelia Spalding. Asa was a lumber and RR contractor and was in IL [still unmarried] in 1850. We haven't located him in any later census. his wife's name and the fact he had 5 children comes from "A Merrill Memorial". A note on Albert Herve's card states he was in Atlanta GA in 1898.  If this is the right Albert H, and we think it probably is, but have no proof, his lineage is Albert H (9), Asa (8), Jesse (7), Richard (6), Jesse (5), Stephen (4), Nathaniel (3,2,1).  More details are available. Immigrant Nathaniel (1) was b. in Wherstead, Suffolk England in 1601 and came to Newbury MA in 1639.  Note that Albert H's grandfather and great great grandfather were named Jesse and that name is carried forward in your grandfather, father and brother. one more reason to believe we have the correct line.

We are Howard and Jean Merrill.  For twenty five years we have been trying to database the Merrill/Merrell family nationwide from the original immigrants down to the present day for all immigrant lines.  So far we have info on over 60,000 Merrill males plus their wives and daughters in our database, but we estimate there have been well over a100,000 so we have a long way to go, and need and appreciate all the help we can get, particularly with the later generations.  We use this database strictly to try and help folks trace their Merrill roots. Be assured that no info on living individuals will become internet accessible from us. While our database is not internet searchable, we will be glad to search it for anybody and share what we find at no cost.  All we ask is that folks share their Merrill data with us so that we can expand our database and do a better job of helping solve Merrill lineage problems. We would be very interested in the details of this line from albert H forward to the present day.
