I am looking for information on my gggg grandfather Elias Merrill born 2/1/1750 in Massachusetts and died 10/18/1802. I know he owned over 500 acres of land in Auburn Maine. I am hoping to find where he is buried. I contacted the city of Auburn but they have no death record for him. I have read in a few places that he did die in Auburn. His wife was Rhoda True. His parents were Daniel Merrill and Elizabeth Clough. His grandparents were Moses Merrill and Mary Clough. Thanks for any information you may have.
Answer: Steve:
A MERRILL MEMORIAL by Samuel Merrill, page 367, says that your Elias died in Minot, now Auburn, ME. The village of Minot still exists and is actually a suburb of Auburn. We don't know where in relation to Minot and Auburn Elias's property was. Often the family plot was actually on a corner of the family farm. Almost all his children also lived in Minot, so in looking for their gravesites you may actually find Elias's.His first wife, Rhoda True, d. in 1797 so Elias is probably buried with her. The Maine Old Cemetery Association has information on just loads of cemeteries in ME, and they may be able to help you locate his gravesite.
You have the lineage correct Elias (5), Daniel (4), Moses (3), Daniel (2), immigrant Nathaniel (1). How do you descend from Elias? You obviously descend from a Merrill daughter somewhere along the line. For 30 years we have been trying to database the various Merrill lines from the original immigrants down to the present. We use this database of over 60,000 Merrill males, plus wives and daughters, strictly to try and help folks trace their Merrill lineage.
